Clouds of smoke rose as ash and cooled lava flows color the rough mountain slopes black. The Italian Lipari island of Stromboli and its constantly active eponymous volcano attracts adventurous and nature-loving people to the rugged landscape.
Discover one of the most visited volcanic islands in the world on this hike: an expert guide will take you to the edge of the crater, from where you can see the unique natural scenery.
Please note that the ascent to the crater is currently not possible. Until the construction work and the development of the hiking trails are completed, no guided tours are offered.
The Aeolian Islands, south of the Italian mainland, are seven islands, each with its unique charm. The volcanic island of Stromboli offers a real adventure due to the constant activity of the eponymous volcano it houses and the easy accessibility to the summit on foot. The UNESCO-protected volcano covering an area of 12.5 km² over the entire island has some areas where red-hot lava emerges to the surface every 15-20 minutes, only a few meters below you.
Nevertheless, the vegetation finds its way and adorns the scenery with some green-yellow spots: because the volcano spits lava constantly, the flora benefits from the nutrient-rich soils. In the summer months, colorful flowers of goat clover or rockrose adorn the otherwise barren landscape. Fig trees and the broom bushes provide pleasant shade in the heat. Bring binoculars and, depending on the season, watch numerous bird species such as ravens, hoopoes, and falcons nesting or migratory birds stopping over on their way to warm countries.
The higher you hike, the better the view of the sea and the Liparian islands. With your guide and other participants, you will hike up the 924 visible meters of the mountain for about 2.5 hours - the underwater volcano measures 2400 meters in total. The varied landscape will make you forget the effort. During the approximately one-hour stay on the volcano summit, there is enough time to regain your strength and take souvenir photos. Afterward, the hike takes you down again for 2.5 hours.
