From the Atacama desert in Chile, you'll go over the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia towards the Pacific coast. Discover the fascinating beauties of this land across borders.
Upon arrival at Calama airport, you will be picked up and taken to explora Atacama.
And so it begins.
In the following days, you will experience the exciting and impressive nature of the Salar de Uyuni together with a small group (maximum of 6 persons). The journey there will be unique and unforgettable. Tonight, however, you can arrive in peace and enjoy your great hotel first.
Highlight: The hotel explora Atacama has its own observatory, from where you can watch the impressive starry sky over the desert.
During the next two days, you will learn about the unique wildlife and cultural life of the Atacama Desert - the driest desert in the world. You can get ready for the "Travesías" (crossings) over the Bolivian Plateau with small tours. These trips are ideal for getting used to the mountain air. Of course you can enjoy your wonderful hotel in the evening and relax there.
3 nights at the **explora Lodge Hotel de Larache ***** **, Atacama, Chile
Please note that the explora Atacama is closed until at least the end of September. For this reason, overnight stays in the explora Atacama are replaced by overnight stays in Tierra Atacama or Alto Atacama.
Today you will leave explora Atacama and the oasis of San Pedro behind early in the morning. You will then cross the border into Bolivia’s south-eastern corner, Hito Cajón. Here, you will have beautiful views of the active volcano Lincancabur, which protrudes 6000 meters from a mountain massif. You will visit the Sol de Mañana, a geothermal field at 4700 meters above sea level.
The charm of the area is characterized mainly by the intense activity of geysers, boiling mud holes and fumaroles (steam exit points). Spectacular pictures are presented and you will not be able to get enough of the spectacular colors of nature in this area. Continue exploring other wetlands, lagoons and salt flats. The Laguna Colorada is a shallow lake in the Eduardo Abaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. The lake has a red color caused by the algae and high mineral content of the water. Typical of the Laguna Colorada is the flamingo population, that you can observe with ease here. After enjoying a small lunch on the edge of the Laguna, we will continue to Cañapa, your accommodation for the day.
Tambo Cañapa is located at 4300 meters altitude and has everything an explora traveler desires. Enjoy the tranquility and solitude of this area that you have just started to discover.
1 night in a living container, Cañapa
Your journey through the Bolivian Altiplato continues. In any case, it is definitely worth getting up early to admire the sunrise over the unique region. On the way, you will cross former mine camps and circle a lake where a variety of native species can be admired. The 2-hour hike takes you between 4,300 and 4,600 meters above sea level. At noon you will pass the camp in Chituca. The former shepherd's cottage was redesigned by explora and consists of small stone houses. The quaint location and simplicity will impress you. After a hearty dinner with a wine in hand, you can enjoy the tranquility of the area and look forward to the next days and your adventures.
1 night in a converted refuge, Chituca
After breakfast, you can choose between various activities. An option would be to explore the environment. Walk through the wild and romantic cactus forest or old terrace farms. Maybe you would like to visit the charming village of San Pedro de Quemes, a former Spanish settlement. From here you have wonderful panoramic views of the plateau and the Salar de Uyuni - the largest salt flat on earth. The white of the flat extends to the horizon and beyond. Slowly but surely you are getting closer to this highlight of the journey and can see it from very close soon. Our tour then continues in the direction of Las Dos Estrellas, also known as the Cave of the Galaxies.
Then the time has come: You will be rewarded with a surreal spectacle of nature - radiant white wherever your eyes go and dead silence. With an area of more than 10,000 square kilometers of salt, the Salar de Uyuni opens up in front of you. Countless salt babies as far as the eye can see. The area extends over the southwest of the country to the border in Chile. For more than 40,000 years, the area was the prehistoric Lake Minchin. Since it dried up, the Salar de Coipasa and the world-famous Salar de Uyuni are in its place. You can now explore the stunning expanse and the cloud-like saltworts at close range. The surface of the salt desert varies here between smooth and studded.
Enjoy a light lunch before heading to Tagua, a small village on the edge of the salt pan. Near the Tunupa volcano is also your next accommodation.
2 nights at Tagua Camp (3,600 m)
Today you will climb to the magnificent and sacred volcano Tunupa (3-4 h hike) over the Salar de Uyuni. The unique shapes and multi-colored rock layers will cast a spell over you. High up, at about 5432 m of altitude, you will have an unforgettable sight over the salt flat of the Uyuni. From above, the Salar looks like a misty layer that lies in an alpine basin. The hike requires good condition, but no mountain lover should miss out on this experience.
If you prefer less action and an easier hike, you can opt for a tour around the mountain. The path leads to small villages and other archaeological sites, with the Salar of Uyuni always stays in the background. Watch as the salt flat changes color according to the time of day.
This morning we will head towards the Chilean border. Make a stop at the quaint village of Llica and fortify yourself with the famous salteñas - the typical Bolivian-filled dumplings.
For lunch, we will stop near the Salar de Coipasa at 3,600 m, before our way continues to Cochane, which is located directly on the Chilean border. Please note that crossing the border may take some time.
In the evening, you and your group will reach Aravilla. A small village in Chile, at an altitude of 3,660 m, which was abandoned some time ago. Here you will find your next accommodation. Depending on the arrival time, you still have time to explore the surrounding wetland - it is probably one of the most beautiful wetlands of the Altiplato. If time is short, you can also enjoy wonderful, with a wine glass in his hand, the last sunset of the travesía.
1 night at the camp in Aravilla in the IIsluga National Park (4,200 m)
Right in the early morning you make your way to the small village of Mauque. Here you can fortify yourself with a light lunch before starting the descent towards the port city of Iquique. The descent is from almost 4,000 m at sea level! On the tour you will be accompanied by wonderful colors of the mountain ranges: a perfect final image of your travesía trip.
At the end of the route you will see Humberstone, an old mining town from the 1920s. The buildings, once full of life, today are only covered with wind and sand. Surely a magical place in this no-man's-land - you will feel like you are in a different time.
In the late afternoon, you will reach Iquique. Enjoy a farewell dinner in one of Chile's most traditional cities.
1 night in Iquique *****, Chile
Today, you will drive back to Iquique airport. If you have booked a later return flight, we recommend that you explore the city in peace again. It does not matter if it goes back home or if your holiday extension starts now. Whatever you are planning, we hope you enjoy it and get home with wonderful and unforgettable memories.
