Day 1: Makassar - Arrival in Sulawesi

You will arrive at the international airport of Makassar and will be greeted in the arrivals hall by a representative of our partner agency. Day 2: Bira - In the footsteps of the best boatbuilders in the world

After you have fortified yourself with a hearty breakfast, your guide awaits you for a sightseeing tour through the streets of Makassar. Your first destination is the Dutch 17th-century restored Fort with the historic Lagaligo Museum, which houses an interesting collection of archaeological finds, porcelain and historical documents. After getting a first glimpse into the history of Sulawesi, drive to the old Paotere Harbor. Day 4: Rantepao - Home of the Toraja

Start your day with a boat trip over Lake Tempe in the morning. This boat trip's main attraction is less the lake itself than the daily life at the lake. The marsh area between Tempe and Sidenreng lakes has been declared a nature reserve and become a haven for many bird species. The inhabitants, who have been living on, with and from the water for generations, live in houses with poles attached to the bottom in order to lure them to better fishing grounds when needed. Afterwards, a spectacular drive awaits you in the homeland of the Toraja. The ride will take the whole day - but there is plenty of time to enjoy the fabulous scenery. The closer you get to the Toraja country, the more legendary rock tombs you will be able to spot. The Toraja cultivate a unique cult around their deceased. The funeral rites are especially spectacular: The ceremony will take place for a whole week, where hundreds of guests will be received, and dozens of water buffalo and pigs will be slaughtered. Day 5: Rantepao - Mysterious traditions in Toraja country

After a hearty breakfast, explore the highland Toraja region. Your first stop is Lemo with its hanging graves. However, this is not just a simple tomb carved in a rock face, a so-called Tau Tau figure - these are carved wooden figures with realistic facial features and worn clothes of the deceased decorate the tomb. In Londa you will visit Ancient Natural Tombs, where many members of the local nobility were buried. Also worth seeing is Kete Kesu, one of the oldest Toraja villages, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The traditional houses, also called Tongkonan, are very special because of their curved roofs, which were pulled up to both gables. In addition, ornate carvings and the horns of sacrificed buffalo decorate the authentic clan houses.

Day 6: Rantepao - Trek through the Toraja country

Today is in the spirit of the mysterious mortuary cult of the Toraja: you will go on a trip to the mountains of Batutumonga. Rice terraces, bamboo forests and coffee plantations offer you a fantastic panorama. In the small villages you will also find rock tombs with their wooden figures, the guards of the dead. Do you want to be active in sports? Small hikes are available to make sightseeing, village life and nature a well-rounded experience. The main attraction is the traditional village of Pallawa, the weaving center of Rantapeo.

Day 7: Say goodbye - End of the journey

Today your journey is coming to an end. After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Makassar. On the way, make a stop in Pare-pare - where lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
