At about 10,900 feet above sea level, Mount Etna is the highest and most active volcano in Europe.
The wine growing areas extend over a belt between 1,476 and 3,608 feet above sea level from Randazzo in the north, over Milo in the east, and around the southern slopes of the volcano.
The San Michele winery is located on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, halfway between Taormina and Catania, between the municipalities of Zafferana and Santa Venerina. The winery, with a long tradition and characteristics of strong innovation, is an example of hospitality and organic farming today. The winery is owned by the Scammacca family, an ancient noble family that came to Sicily with the Angevins in the late twelfth century and settled in Catania. For many years, the Scammacca have been passionate farmers and winemakers. Since 1850, the San Michele estate has been growing grapes and producing the famous Etna wines.
