Still left unbothered by mass tourism, the route from Darwin to Perth offers a feast for the eyes. Between the Indian Ocean and the Outback, a true adventure awaits you on our rental car round trip.

Destination

Oceania & South Pacific

Darwin - Kimberley Region - Kununurra - Ningaloo Reef - Monkey Mia - Kalbarri - Perth

We recommend a trip from Darwin to Perth from mid April to October. We are happy to advise you on the ideal period for your trip.

Welcome Down Under. You will land at Perth International Airport and receive a warm welcome in the arrival hall from the driver of your transfer. After a short drive, you will reach your first accommodation.

Darwin, the gateway to the Top End, is a multicultural city and also the bridge to Asia. A total of 75 different nationalities live here - you too will certainly feel at home in Darwin!

Although Darwin is the smallest federal capital of Australia, it is booming. The harbor on the Timor Sea offers cozy restaurants where you can try freshly caught fish. In the dry season, visit the sunset market at Mindil Beach on Thursday or Sunday.

Stroll through the numerous stores in the Smith Street Mall or watch the hustle and bustle over an excellent cup of coffee. If you still want to go out in the evening, Michell Street is the place to be. Here you will find trendy cafes, bars and clubs.

Darwin Airport - Hotel Darwin: approx. 15 minutes / 11 km

2 nights in Darwin, Australia

Today you will pick up your rental car in Darwin, which you will use to flexibly explore the west coast of Australia. You will set off for Litchfield National Park.

Often called the "little brother" of Kakadu National Park, the area lures you in with fascinating waterfalls, refreshing freshwater pools and tropical temperatures. In contrast to the other national parks, bathing and swimming in the refreshing pools is quite safe.

The national park is also ideal for wildlife viewing. With a little luck, you may even catch a glimpse of antelope kangaroos, flying foxes, bats, possums and dingoes.

No matter what time of year it is, Kakadu National Park is always worth a visit. Six different landscapes provide a lot of variety. About 1700 plant species, 300 bird species and over 60 mammal species exist in Australia's most famous national park.

The lowlands of the national park are among the most important wetlands in the world and are usually flooded from November to May. Rushing waterfalls then tumble down the oasis from the otherwise dry sandstone plateaus. The area is also known for its crocodiles - would you have guessed that Crocodile Dundee was filmed here?

Kakadu National Park is also a great place to learn about aboriginal culture and history. Numerous aboriginal petroglyphs offer a very good insight into the aborigines' connection to nature and their philosophy.

Once you are here, you should definitely take a Yellow Water tour through the waters of the Yellow Water Billabong. On this tour, you will learn everything you need to know about the animals, the nature and the wetland. You can observe Australia's wild crocodiles as well as native birds at close range.

Katherine is the fourth largest town in the state of Northern Territory after Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs. Situated on the Katherine River, this small town is home to the Jawoyn and Dagoman Aborigines, who make up 60% of the population of Katherine River.

A real highlight is the Katherine Gorge in the Nitmiluk National Park. The imposing 12-kilometer-long river gorge system is made up of 13 individual gorges surrounded by red sandstone cliff walls up to 70 meters high.

A bushwalk, boat ride or canoe is the best way to explore the area. No matter which activity you choose, be sure not to forget your camera! At noon, when temperatures rise, the Katherine River provides a welcome refreshment.

But other than remarkable nature, the wildlife in Nitmiluk National Park also has a lot to offer: kangaroos, snow-white cockatoos and colorful parrots will surely sweeten your day.

Kakadu National Park - Katherine: approx. 4 hours 30 minutes / 370 km

1 overnight stay in Katherine, Australia

After leaving Katherine, you will drive past Australia's largest reservoir, Lake Arygle, on your way to Kununurra. Why don't you make a stop here? There are viewing platforms as well as picnic areas with nice barbecue areas. There are also boat tours on the reservoir. The most popular trip is the Sunset Cruise. The lake glows at sunset. But there is also a lot to see on land. With a little luck, you can take pictures of a cute wallaby on the shore.

Katherine - Kununurra: approx. 7 hours / 542 km

2 nights with breakfast in Kununurra, Australia

With new impressions in your luggage, you will leave for Halls Creek today. On the way, don't miss the Bungle Bungle Range at the Purnululu National Park. Known for its orange and black stripes, the sandstone formation dates back to 360 million years ago. Since 2003, this formation, which reminds us of beehives, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A helicopter flight over the area is an unforgettable experience.

7d9de2da-e859-11e8-a3c1-068ed014655a

Next, you will continue your journey to Halls Creek. In 1885, gold was discovered here for the first time, attracting almost 15,000 people from all regions of the country. The population is mostly made up of aborigines live here. One of the most significant sights of this gold mining town is the Small Great Wall of China, which, unlike the world-famous Great Wall of China, is made of natural quartz sand and is not man-made. The wall is located about 5 kilometers outside the city and you can be reach it via an unpaved road. From the parking lot you can already enjoy a magnificent view of this natural wonder. But it is especially beautiful to look at in the evening light, when the white quartz veins on the ridges shimmer golden.

Kununurra - Halls Creek: approx. 4 hours / 360 km

Overnight stay in Halls Creek, Australia

Your route today continues along the Great Northern Highway through the intriguing Kimberley region. Fitzroy Crossing is a small settlement at the foot of the central Kimberley Mountains, one of the most isolated areas on the continent. Like in Halls Creek, the population here is mostly made up of aborigines.

Halls Creek - Fitzroy Crossing: approx. 3 hours / 290 km

Overnight stay in Fitzroy Crossing, Australia

Your destination today is Broome. On the way there, we recommend a stopover in the small town of Derby. Here stands the over 1500-year-old Boab Prison Tree, a Boab prison tree where prisoners were incarcerated many years ago.

Affectionately called the Pearl of the North, Broome is home to the South Sea Pearl. Due to its discovery in the 18th century, the town experienced commercial immigration: pearl divers from Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines found their new home here and gave Broome its multicultural flair. Today you can still buy pearls everywhere here.

808fb0fe-e859-11e8-8142-068ed014655a

Broome is also the western gateway to the Kimberley region and the ideal starting point for various activities and excursions in several parts of the Kimberley. The surrounding area has it all: white beaches and turquoise waters meet a modern ambience and traditional aboriginal culture.

A fantastic contrast to the turquoise sea is the Gantheaume Point - red, steep cliffs plunge into the blue ocean and offer a magnificent view of the 22-kilometer-long Cable Beach. At low tide, you can even see 130-million-year-old dinosaur tracks.

At Cable Beach, you should take a camel ride at sunset. From the back of your camel, you can comfortably admire the impressive colors of the sun's rays on the Indian Ocean.

Fitzroy Crossing - Broome: approx. 4 hours / 400 km

2 nights in Broome, Australia

You will leave Broome and drive deep into the Great Sandy Desert, a huge uninhabited area of red sand, until you reach the 80 Mile Beach halfway between Broome and Port Hedland. Get ready to experience 80 miles of snow-white beach with countless shells and turquoise sea - a beach lover's dream. The beach runs parallel to the Great Northern Highway and is therefore easily accessible for a walk or for bird watching. More than 20 different species of birds have found their habitat here and in winter, migratory birds heading north also stay here. Between June and October, you can even watch the passing humpback whales here. Another attraction is the impressive sunset at 80 Mile Beach. The setting sun makes the white dream beach glow pink - simply beautiful.

With about 15000 inhabitants, Port Hedland and its important harbor is one of the largest cities on the Australian west coast. A special highlight is the natural phenomenon known as Stairway to the Moon. Between March and October, once a month, the full moon rises directly over the sea, creating an optical illusion: the rays hit the puddles left by the low tide, creating the image of a stairway that seems to lead to the moon. You'll have the best view of this natural phenomenon at Cooke Point. Sit back, relax and enjoy the view.

Broome - Port Hedland: approx. 6 hours 30 minutes / approx. 610 km

Overnight stay with breakfast in Port Hedland, Australia

The Karijini National Park, which spans over 627 km², is one of the most spectacular sights of Western Australia. Known for its rugged red landscapes, deep gorges and impressive waterfalls, the unique nature will also wash over you.

In the center of the nature reserve there is a visitor center. In the north, on the other hand, hiking trails of various difficulty levels lead through breathtaking gorges to waterfalls surrounded by rust-red rocks. The southern part of the nature reserve is not accessible. Several short hiking trails allow you to easily explore the natural wonders of Karijini National Park. The two-kilometer Gorge Rim Trail (including return) takes you from the Circular Pool lookout to the end of the Dales Gorge.

Alternatively, there is also a hike that leads from the Dales Gorge parking lot to the most popular waterfall, Fortescue Fall and Circular Pool. Please note that this is a steep descent. For 800 meters (including the way back), you will need about 2 hours.

For experienced hikers, the 9-kilometer-long (incl. way back) Mount Bruce Summit Walk is just the thing. On this tour, you will climb to the top of Mount Bruce and will be rewarded with a great view of the surrounding area.

No matter which walk you choose, you will be amazed by the spectacular scenery.

Port Hedland - Karijini National Park: approx. 5 hours / 392 km

2 nights with breakfast in Karijini National Park, Australia

Leaving the Karijini National Park, you are going to drive west on the North West Coastal Highway N°1 to Coral Bay. You need about 8 hours to cover the distance.

With only about 200 inhabitants, Coral Bay is the heart of the colorful Ningaloo Reef. Here you will find white sandy beaches and turquoise water - Pudry Point and Paradise Beach are ideal places for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. At Point Maud, you can take great photos of free-roaming manta rays and marvel at sharks in a breeding tank. Between October and March, there are sometimes even up to 200 sharks living in the basin.

Furthermore, from March to the end of July, you have the best chances to see the completely harmless whale sharks in Coral Bay. Between June and November, humpback whales migrate through the region.

A hidden gem is the Ningaloo Reef in the Ningaloo Marine Park. The largest fringing reef in Australia extends over 300 kilometers off the coast of Western Australia and offers a beautiful, species-rich underwater world. Up to 250 coral species and about 500 fish species live in the shallow lagoons here. In contrast to the world-famous Great Barrier Reef, which you can only reach by plane or boat, you only have to swim a few hundred meters here and then you are already really in the middle of it: From colorful striped clown fish to small bristlenose to turquoise-green, azure and purple parrot fish, every diver's dream comes true here.

If you want to stay dry, you can take part in a glass-bottom boat tour and watch the colorful underwater world through the window. This trip is a great experience for children, in particular - rarely do you get so close to the underwater world from a boat.

Karijini National Park - Coral Bay: approx. 8 hours / 630 km

2 nights in Coral Bay, Australia

Your destination today is Monkey Mia, about 8 hours away. On the way, we recommend a stop at Hamelin Pool to admire its famous stromatolites. These are the oldest living organisms in the world, sedimentary rocks made of algae, bacteria and small animals. Because of the high salinity in the shallow pool, the oldest life forms on earth have no direct enemies, which gives them the ideal living conditions to survive.

Here at the southernmost end of Shark Bay, you can capture the most beautiful and spectacular sedimentary rocks for eternity - simply unique.

With great photos in your luggage, you will continue your journey to Monkey Mia. Located in the World Heritage Area of Shark Bay on the east coast of the Peron Peninsula, the playful dolphins are a real attraction. Attracted by the fresh fish of the rangers, six to eight wild dolphins have visited the picturesque bay of Monkey Mia every day for 40 years already. With a bit of luck, you will be selected by a ranger and may feed the sweet mammals with him.

Coral Bay - Monkey Mia: approx. 6 hours / 581 km

2 nights in Monkey Mia, Australia

88dbe03e-e859-11e8-ad51-068ed014655a

Today your itinerary takes you further to Kalbarri. Spectacular gorges, impressive red cliffs on the coast and magnificent rock formations around the Murchison River are just some of the highlights that await you here. From the numerous viewing platforms on the 13-kilometer-long coastal cliff, you can enjoy a great view of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding area. Between June and November, you can even watch numerous humpback whales with their calves along the coast and playful dolphins in the bay.

Are you a sports lover? The unique area is ideal for mountain bike tours, hiking as well as surfing, playing tennis and golf. You are going to experience a real adrenaline kick when abseiling down a mountain.

Monkey Mia - Kalbarri: 400 km / approx. 4 hours

Overnight stay in Kalbarri, Australia

You will drive along the Batavia Coast, where the first European settlers settled in 1629, until you reach the former fishing village of Cervantes. Golden yellow beaches and crystal clear waters are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, windsurfing or boat trips. A visit to the Nambung National Park is highly recommended. Some of the rock formations are even up to five meters high and form a spectacular dune landscape. Formed by the weather, some have jagged or rounded crests. A unique play of colors can be experienced at sunrise or sunset, when the imposing stone columns shine in different tones.

From the Pinnacles lookout point, you can capture this magical flair for eternity. Bird lovers will also get their money's worth here: Pull out your binoculars and observe over 90 species of birds.

Kalbarri - Cervantes: approx. 4 hours / 380 km

Overnight stay in Cervantes, Australia

Perth is the loneliest big city in the world and enjoys great popularity despite its remoteness. It is here that pulsating city feeling meets relaxing beach life and the adventurous outback. It is also worth mentioning that Perth is also the sunniest city in Australia with about 9,000 hours of sunshine per year.

After freshening up briefly in your room, what do you think about a little city stroll through the lively streets of the world metropolis on the banks of the Swan River?

We recommend that you pay a visit to the 400-hectare Kings Park. Stroll along the huge green area with a cool drink in your hand and marvel at the native flora and fauna. Due to the numerous barbecue stations, you can also enjoy a delicious picnic here.

8f014968-e859-11e8-b3ea-068ed014655a

Those who enjoy shopping are going to find what they want in the Hay Street Mall and on King Street. Numerous cafés and restaurants line Wolf Lane, from where you can observe the hustle and bustle of the city.

About 30 minutes from Perth is the historic harbor town of Fremantle. Pack your bath towel and spend a relaxing afternoon on the beautiful beach. A real highlight is the Cappuccino Strip with its numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. Enjoy a freshly brewed coffee before continuing on to Fremantle Market. Here you can sample local delicacies. With a bit of luck, you'll also find a souvenir or two for your loved ones back home.

Halfway back to Perth is the picturesque Cottesloe Beach, Perth's most popular beach. Don't miss the sunset - it's pure romance.

Cervantes - Perth: approx. 2 hours / 200 km

2 nights in Perth, Australia
