Destination

Asia

  1. Malaysia
  2. Malay Peninsula

Your tour starts at 8 AM. Once you have arrived at the E&O Hotel in Penang, you and your guide will kick off this cultural experience at St. George’s Church. Dating back to the 19th century, it is the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Only a few feet away you will find the very different Goddess of Mercy Temple, which originates from the Chinese tradition and attracts believers of Taoism and Confucianism. With its red roof and winding decorations, it is a striking building in the middle of the streets of Penang. Dive into a new world just one street corner away. Passing colorful stalls where flower garlands are made, you will soon reach the Pinang Peranakan Mansion.

Since it was built at the end of the 19th century, you will find a colorful mixture of antiques and artifacts inside the building, which have been created from a wide variety of cultural influences. Explore the history behind this house on a tour that shows you how the culture of the Baba and Nyonyas came to be. 1000 truly unique works of art are on display here today, reflecting the past history.

Passing King Street and Market Street you will also reach numerous spice stores, which you will be able to smell from afar. Let the merchants explain the use and effect of spices to you and learn how they refine their dishes. Walk past sari stores, accessories, incense sticks, and old mills that grind chili and herbs. There is a very special scent in the air here, as various breakfasts, such as Roti Canai and Teh Tarik, are prepared at the food stands.

The Sri Mariamman Temple, a Hindu temple, is your next stop before you leave for the last attraction, Khoo Kongsi. Khoo Kongsi is a large clan house with valuable ornamental decorations that illustrate the presence of the Chinese in Penang.
