Destination

Europe

Munich - Füssen - Zugspitze - Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Kochel am See - Lake Walchen - Linderhof

After your arrival at the airport or main station, you will be picked up by our private driver-guide or take your rental car and drive to your first accommodation. Your vacation in Füssen and the surrounding area begins now.

If you would like to arrive with your own vehicle, the journey begins with your check-in at the hotel in Füssen.

Füssen is a magnificent city that borders Austria in the south. It is located on a medieval trade route - its former historical importance can be seen, among other things, in the Gothic castle called Hohes Schloss, which once served as the summer residence of the Augsburg bishops and today houses a regional art museum.

In the afternoon, change into your hiking shoes come. You will go on a two-hour-long hike around the Alpsee lake with views of Neuschwanstein Castle (optional). The idyllic Upper Bavarian alpine landscape will follow you on your way to the "Royal Land". Once at the castle, you'll learn all about the myth of King Ludwig II, the most enigmatic of Bavarian kings (guided tour optional). Known for his affinity for extravagance and fine art, he was called the Fairy Tale King. From what is probably Germany's most famous castle, which also served as the inspiration for Walt Disney's castle, you will then hike (optional) to Marienbrücke, where you can catch the best view of Neuschwanstein. The walk to the bridge takes about half an hour. You can park your car comfortably and free of charge at the Königssträßchen parking lot.

You are going hop into your rental car or your own vehicle first thing in the morning, headed to Germany’s highest mountain. Once at the bottom station, take the cable car (optional) up to the 2,962-meter Zugspitze, also known as the "Top of Germany", to enjoy the breathtaking views! Take your time high up on Germany's highest point for a break.(If you booked the round trip with a driver-guide, they will accompany you until the day of departure).

Pro tip: Before returning to Füssen, visit Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the famous ski resort. In Garmisch, stroll through the historic Frühlingsstraße and visit the famous Lüftlmalereien. Richly decorated balconies on Werdenfels farmhouses and Biedermeier frescoes at Gasthof Husar are constant reminders of old Bavaria. Revel in bygone times in historic Partenkirchen. Fresco paintings, the Werdenfelser Heimatmuseum or the Sebastianskirche - you will follow the traces of history and experience the culture of this region up close.

In the afternoon, you will go on a hike in the impressive Partnachklamm gorge (optional).

The can’t-miss Partnachklamm is about 700 meters long and its walls rise up to 80 meters. You can also access it in winter through tunnels and passages blasted into the rock. The bizarre ice formations give it a special charm at this time of year. Cross the gorge over an iron bridge, which leads you over the river for 68 meters and was already built in 1914. The bridge connects the Hausberg area with the Wamberg. Every year the Partnachklamm receives over 200,000 visitors.

Time spent traveling from Füssen to Garmisch-Patenkirchen via Zugspitze (without stops or stays): approx. 1.5 hours / 74 km

Today you can enjoy the beautiful Bavarian landscape and culture, as we head to the two-lake region at Herzogstand around Kochelsee and Walchensee. Enjoy a walk here.

The southern part of the Kochelsee (or Lake Kochel) is still surrounded by mountains, the northern part lies in the flat alpine foothills and is bordered by the Loisach-Kochelsee moor. Located about 600 meters above sea level, Lake Kochel is about six square kilometers in size and over 60 meters deep. The shore length is almost 15 kilometers.

Lake Walchen invites you to surrender to the dreamlike landscape. The so-called Bavarian Caribbean is located at an altitude of 800 meters. It is the largest mountain lake in Germany, measuring over 16 square kilometers and over 190 meters in depth.

Even the famous poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was inspired by both lakes.

Enjoy the wonderful nature of southern Germany on a 25 kilometer bike tour around the Walchensee (optional).

After the bike tour, a ride on the Herzogstandbahn (optional) is on the agenda. This takes you from the valley station to the Fahrenberg. From there, a ten-minute trail leads to the Herzogstand mountain inn. The route is easy to follow and offers magnificent views of the lakes and mountains.

Today is all about history: You will visit the Linderhof Palace and its gardens with a guide (optional). The castle was the last home of King Ludwig II. It is also considered the “fairytale king's” favorite castle, for it was by far where he stayed most often. The magnificent interior is a mixture of French and Bavarian Rococo. The outdoor facilities are no less impressive. The park combines French and Italian elements of the Baroque garden and the English landscape gardens of that time.

After the tour, you will return home.

If you would like to extend your stay, we recommend a side trip to Lake Constance. Our tip: Go to Lindau and visit the pile dwellings followed by a wine tasting at a winery or a visit to the monkey mountain of Salem. Just talk to our travel consultants. We will be happy to assist you with your travel plans.
