The island world of the Bahamas is diverse and multifaceted - each of the 16 tourist-developed islands has its own charm, even if they all have crystal clear water in common. This island hopping takes you from Nassau to the fine sandy dream beaches of the Out Islands - Eleuthera, Harbour Island and Long Island.
Your island hopping starts at Nassau International Airport. After your private meet and greet, a small plane will fly you over this slice of paradise to your first stay on the Out Islands, a trip of about 30 minutes. The Out Islands are the smaller, more pristine islands of the Bahamas - with the exception of New Providence Island, where the capital and also largest Bahamian city of Nassau is located, and Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located.
About 100 kilometers east of Nassau are Eleuthera and Harbour Island, surrounded by many other tiny islands and sandbanks. After arriving at the small airport on the northern tip of Eleuthera, take a cab for a short ride to the pier, where an idyllic five-minute-long water cab crossing will take you to tranquil Harbour Island. After another five-minute-long cab ride, you'll arrive at your boutique hotel for the next four nights.
Its seclusion makes this small island, also known as the "Nantucket of the Caribbean" and once home to Dunmore Town, the capital of the Bahamas, even more unique today. Golf carts can be rented for individual transportation on Harbour Island. Our tip: The famous Pink Sands Beach of Harbour Island is beautiful at any time of the day, but at sunset the pink sand glows especially brightly due to shell particles. Eleuthera comes from the Greek word for freedom: the first settlers stranded here in the 17th century. Today, vacationers appreciate the island's tranquility and seclusion, and Lenny Kravitz even dedicated a song to Eleuthera. The so-called Glass Window Bridge offers an impressive backdrop. It spans a particularly narrow piece of land that separates the deep blue Atlantic from Eleuthera's turquoise bay. About a mile to the south are the Queen's Baths. These are a rocky collection of natural pools sculpted by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Explore this natural wonder at low tide, when the sun warms the pools to just the right temperature. At the northern end of the island, surfers are also magically drawn to the sometimes shoulder-high waves.
Also to the far north is the ferry-accessible offshore island of Spanish Wells, one of the best-kept secrets. A short crossing brings you to this quiet fishing village on St. George's Cay. The beach here has white, soft powder sand and is perfect for walking. Our tip: You should definitely enjoy freshly caught lobster here! However, there would also be pleasure of the fruity nature. Typical for Eleuthera are pineapple fields as far as the eye can see. Some of the sweetest varieties are grown here, and every year in June the famous Pineapple Festival takes place.
4 nights with breakfast on Harbour Island , Eleuthera, Bahamas
On the fifth day, your journey takes you by small plane for a short stop in Nassau and from there on with fantastic views south to Long Island. A comfortable cab transfer from Santa Maria Airport will transport you to your next accommodation, Cape Santa Maria.
Long Island is one of the most pristine islands in the Bahamas and lives up to its name: the island is 100 kilometers long and only six kilometers wide. A single road crosses the island with small spur roads to the left and right that lead, among other things, to St. Mary's Catholic Church. This is the oldest church in the Bahamas.
Magnificent coral reefs, beautiful seas and quiet beaches make Long Island a paradise for anglers, divers and boaters. This tranquil island offers world-class opportunities from deep-sea fishing to reef fishing to bonefishing for anglers, as well as exciting encounters with marine life. Dean's Blue Hole is also one of the deepest blue holes in the world at 202 meters deep. A fascinating challenge for apnoea divers.
In addition, Hamilton's Cave is the largest cave system in the Bahamas. It is believed that around 500 AD the indigenous Lucayan people lived here and their artifacts and cave drawings were later discovered.
