Description

Japanese cuisine is so highly regarded that it has been added to UNESCOS’s intangible world heritage list. Kyoto in particular is famous within Japan for the artful preparation of food. It is representative of Japanese cuisine in many places. As part of our cooking class in Kyoto, you will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of making popular Japanese dishes in a real Kyoto townhouse - also known as a machiya in Japanese.

Destination

Asia

  1. Japan

Upon entering Machiya, you will be greeted by your friendly host, who will introduce you to the ingredients, necessary preparations and some tips for Japanese home cooking. Choose between the morning and afternoon classes depending on your preference.

Morning Class: Bento Style (09:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.).

Bento is the iconic Japanese lunch box filled at home or sold in convenience stores, train stations and other places around town. In this class, you will cook and eat your own shokado bento. It’s a variety that originated in Kyoto and includes familiar dishes such as tempura, miso soup and sushi.

Afternoon Course: Izakaya Style (2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.).

The afternoon Izakaya class is a great way to immerse yourself in the food culture of Japanese pubs. Smaller dishes, often served with a cold beer, are prepared. These include steamed egg custard and sticky rice with fish broth.

The course consists of two parts. First, you are going to cook two to three dishes and then taste them. Then you are going to return to the kitchen and prepare two to three more dishes before you get to taste it again. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere of an izakaya restaurant, prepare your own dishes and feast in a relaxed atmosphere.
