Muscat is the capital of Oman and was chosen as the Arab Capital of Culture in 2006. Don’t forget to pack your camera for the wonderful sightseeing tour. The magnificent museums, lively markets, and the smell of incense will surely leave an imprint on your mind for years to come. Your first destination is the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, also known as the "Great Mosque". The main mosque is one of the most important sights in Oman and is the fifth largest mosque in the world. Get your camera out and take great pictures. The interior is also a real eye-catcher. Decorated with beautiful handicrafts and adorned with woven oriental carpets, a magnificent Swarovski chandelier adorns the 50-meter high dome - simply breathtaking!
From the mosque you can easily reach the Bait Al Zubair, a museum about the development of Oman. Learn more about the history of Oman and marvel at traditional costumes, jewelry, silver jewelry, and furniture. Afterwards, you will visit the Al Alam Palace. Built in 1972, the palace complex of Sultan Qabus serves mainly representative purposes today and is therefore not open to the public. Nevertheless it is worth a tour and beautiful to look at. Especially its blue and golden columns characterize the palace, which is surrounded by two big fortresses. To its right you can see the Al Jalali castle and to its left is Al Mirani - two memorials of the Portuguese occupation.
Your tour continues to the Muttrah Souk, the oldest market in the Gulf State of Oman. Stroll through the narrow alleys filled with incense and sandalwood scents and find the odd souvenir. Tip: Haggle with the traders, it's really worth it!
